The first Delta Jabberwock, an idea conceived by Soror Marion Conover of Boston’s Iota Chapter in 1925, began as a means of raising scholarship funds. From this successful venture, Delta Sigma Theta’s Jabberwock event was born and became a part of Delta tradition.
Soon, Iota's annual production was adopted by chapters of the sorority throughout the country. On December 28th, 1947, Jabberwock was formally adopted and copyrighted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. have convened various organizations in the community for the express purpose of fostering positive relationships and providing an evening of fun and entertainment. The proceeds from Jabberwock are designated for scholarship and community projects.
Scholarship Fundraising Gala
The Minerva Educational Foundation (MEF), Incorporated and the Glen Ellyn Area Alumnae Chapter (GEAAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated are hosting a scholarship fundraiser gala on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Brookfield Zoo at 7 pm. Our gala theme is The Rebirth of C.O.O.L., Creating Opportunities for Optimal Learning, an ode to our past and impression on our future. The money raised will fund our scholarship program that awards young, college-bound students with financial assistance.
Over the past 10 years, the Minerva Educational Foundation has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarship awards. In addition to scholarships, contributions to the Foundation also support various national and local educational programs, such as ACT-SO (the NAACP youth program promoting academic and cultural excellence), and the United Negro College Fund. One of the local signature programs is the “Just Us Girls” Health and Wellness Conference, which for the past ten years has provided educational workshops annually to 300-350 at-risk girls ages 11-17.
Feedback from scholarship recipients
“I graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor’s in Human Relations with a minor in Political Science. I have just finished my first semester at John Marshall Law School. I think John Marshall is the right school for me. Thank you for all your support and encouragement over the years. I hope I have made you proud with my accomplishments thus far. “ Madelyn M.
“In the fall of 2011, I enrolled at the University of Notre Dame with a major in Psychology and Pre-Health studies. Throughout my time at Notre Dame, I have participated in a variety of extracurricular activities, ranging from intramural sports to service organizations. Academically, I was able to participate in two different research labs. I was able to study abroad in London, England. Without your assistance, I surely would not have been able to fund my education. I am now a first year medical student at the Medical College of Wisconsin and I want to tell you how the scholarships you provide truly do make a difference in the lives of each recipient.” Mark D.
“I have been very involved during my 3 years. I have hundreds of hours of community service, a full member of our honors program, earned my pilot's license, became a leader on some of the largest on-campus organizations, and a member of several intramural sports teams. Additionally, I was a student employee through all of these times and earned all-academic honors such as Dean's list, president's honor roll, etc.
Although it's only my third year at the University of North Dakota, I am actually graduating in August. I recently applied for and got accepted to be an air traffic controller with the FAA, and should be sent to training within the next six months. This job had 28,000 applicants and only 1,700 were selected to even take the pre-employment tests.” Jacob T.
